Job Summary:
The School Librarian is responsible for managing and overseeing the school library and its resources, ensuring a conducive learning environment for students, teachers, and staff. They play a vital role in promoting literacy, fostering a love for reading, and providing access to a wide range of educational materials. The School Librarian collaborates with teachers to integrate library resources into the curriculum and assists students in developing information literacy skills.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Manage the school library facility, ensuring it is organized, clean, and welcoming.
2. Develop and maintain a comprehensive collection of print and digital resources suitable for students at different grade levels.
3. Assist students in locating and selecting appropriate reading materials, providing recommendations based on their interests and reading levels.
4. Teach students how to effectively use library resources, including online databases, reference materials, and catalog systems.
5. Collaborate with teachers to integrate library resources into lesson plans and support the curriculum.
6. Conduct regular reading programs, book clubs, and other literacy-related activities to promote a love for reading among students.
7. Facilitate group visits to the library, providing guidance and support to classes and individual students.
8. Assist students in research projects, teaching them how to locate, evaluate, and use information ethically and effectively.
9. Foster an inclusive and diverse library environment that respects and represents all cultural backgrounds and perspectives.
10. Maintain accurate records of library materials, loans, and returns using library management software.
11. Evaluate and select new materials to expand the library collection, considering relevance, accuracy, and educational value.
12. Collaborate with other librarians and attend professional development opportunities to stay updated on library trends and best practices.
13. Establish and maintain relationships with vendors, publishers, and community organizations to enhance library services.
14. Stay informed about copyright laws and ensure compliance when reproducing or distributing materials.
15. Support and participate in school-wide events, such as author visits, book fairs, and literacy celebrations.
Qualifications and Skills:
1. Bachelor's degree in Library and Information Science or related field.
2. Master's degree in Library and Information Science (preferred).
3. Previous experience working in a library or educational setting (preferred).
4. Knowledge of library management systems and online databases.
5. Strong organizational and multitasking abilities.
6. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
7. Proficient in technology and digital literacy.
8. Familiarity with educational standards and curriculum integration.
9. Ability to work collaboratively with teachers, administrators, and students.
10. Passion for promoting literacy and a love for reading among students.
11. Understanding of information literacy concepts and the ability to teach them effectively.
12. Ability to create an inclusive and welcoming environment for all library users.
